Every year, Sephora teams up with the color experts, Pantone, to create beauty products featuring the Color of the Year. The Color of the Year for 2015 is Marsala, “an earthy red wine”. When I saw the collection they were coming out with, I was immediately drawn to the nude lip collection pictured above. Keep reading to see if the Marsala Layering Lip Collection lived up to my expectations.
Immediately when I saw these gorgeous little lippies, I thought of the Hourglass Femme Nude Lip Stylos. I’ve always wanted to try the Nude Lip Stylos, but due to the hefty $30 price, I haven’t yet. This whole set of 5 lippies was $28 and I thought that was a good price for 5 lip products. When I received the package in the mail, I was surprised at how small they were. Take a look at them next to my iPhone 6 for reference.
Even though they were smaller than I expected, I was quite okay with that because I never go through full lipsticks. Also, I felt like these would be the perfect size to slip into my lab coat pocket for work.
These 5 shades are meant to be layered together to create the perfect nude lip. Some are a little more opaque, while others are sheer.
Unfortunately, these were so sheer that it took me 5 swipes to get enough color for these swatches. Rose Dawn was the most pigmented out of the bunch and has more of satin finish, whereas the other colors have a glossier finish. These look pretty on the lips, but they don’t give much color at all. They wore pretty well on me and lasted around 3 hours which isn’t bad for a sheer lipstick. These didn’t dry my lips out, but I didn’t find that they were overly moisturizing either.
Remember how I said these would be perfect to stash in my lab coat pocket for work? Well, I tried that and ended up ruining one of my lab coats. There was lipstick EVERYWHERE in my pocket. The caps aren’t tight enough to stay on. That was the last straw for me!
Overall, I was disappointed in the Marsala Layering Lip Collection. They were just too sheer and not as convenient as I expected them to be. If you have fair skin, these might show up better on your skin, but for me, these were just not special at all. If I hadn’t ruined the 2 lipsticks that ended up all over my pocket, I would probably take this back.
- Sleek packaging
- Decent wear time
- Comfortable wear
- Doesn’t accentuate dryness on lips
- Not enough variance in shades
- Not very pigmented
- Caps don’t fit tightly, so may result in a mess in your handbag or pocket
- Not much product for the money
Final Grade: C
