I finally tried my first Miss Jessie’s product! If you follow me on Instagram, you probably saw when I scored the Super Sweetback Treatment on clearance for 50% off (normally $48). The Super Sweetback Treatment (henceforth referred to as SST) is a deep conditioner that promises to soften the hair and encourage growth. I’ve had enough time to properly test this product out, so keep reading if you want to know my thoughts!
First I want to clear something up. No, I repeat NO conditioner will make your hair grow. Conditioners (and other hair products) can help you maintain your length by preventing breakage and that will cause you to see your hair grow longer! I think it is very misleading for Miss Jessie’s to claim that this product makes your hair grow AND that claim is on multiple places on this jar. False claims aside, let’s get into the rest of this review.
SST is a pretty thick deep conditioner, the texture is similar to a body butter. Due to the thickness, I would not suggest using this product on dry hair because you will end up using more product than is necessary. SST has a distinct smell to it. It smells like really sweet chemicals! It’s almost like they tried to cover the chemical scent with candy perfume. I am definitely not a fan of the scent!
I’ve used this product 3 times and I do have to say that it works well as a deep conditioner. After using, it leaves my hair feeling soft and moisturized. I apply this product on wet hair and leave on for at least 30 minutes. When I use it with a plastic cap on, it seems to work better. It is not the best detangler in my opinion, but if my hair was not too tangled to begin with, it did a decent job.
For the most part, I usually stay away from hair products with silicones in them because they can build up on the hair if you are using a sulfate-free shampoo (which I normally use). However this product is full of ‘cones and any other chemical you can think of (kidding) and I have not noticed any major build-up on my hair.
Overall, I like this conditioner, but I don’t think it is worth the price. It does do a nice job of softening my hair, but not anything amazing in my honest opinion.
- leaves my hair soft and moisturized
- a little product goes a long way on wet hair
- can be purchased “on the ground” (Target & other retailers)
- doesn’t cause build up
- it’s $48!!!
- cheap, non-natural ingredients for a high price tag
- candied chemical smell
- doesn’t detangle well
Final Grade: C+ It does the job, but not so well that it warrants a $48 price tag.
