August 2012 Favorites

It’s the end of the month, so it’s time for my monthly favorites video! Check it out below! If you open it up in YouTube, you can see a full product listing for all items mentioned. Enjoy!

What were some of your favorite products for the month of August?

Affordable Makeup Starter Kit

I know there are quite a few of you who are beginners in makeup. With all the options available, it can be quite overwhelming when deciding what to buy. I decided to do a video showing the items I would suggest for those of you who are just starting out.

foundation, concealer, blush, eyeshadow, eyeliner, mascara, lipstick

Unfortunately, I had to break this up into 2 videos because of the time limit put on YouTube videos. The first video shows the things that I think are most essential and the second video shows the extras that you may decide to get.

face primer, eye primer, cream eyeshadow, bronzer, highlighter, brushes

Nail of the Day: China Glaze Flip Flop Fantasy

It’s almost the end of summer so I have been trying to get the last few uses out of my super bright nail polishes before fall hits. China Glaze Flip Flop Fantasy is a super bright neon pink with a hint of orange. This shade screams summer! I know this color shows up pretty bright in the picture, but it is even brighter in real life. I love the color of this polish. This is the first time I have worn it on my fingernails and right after I started polishing, I realized why. This took me 3 coats to get completely opaque. Also, because this is a neon, it has a matte finish which I personally am not a fan of. The picture above is shown with a top coat. The other downside of this polish is that it chipped within 24 hours (with a good base and top coat)! In my book, that is totally unacceptable, especially since I didn’t do anything that would normally make my polish chip. I will continue to wear this on my toes, but this is probably the last time it will touch my fingertips.

Have you tried Flip Flop Fantasy? Did you have a similar experience to mine?

Staple Hair Product Review Series: Donna Marie Dream Curling Creme

I know ya’ll thought that I forgot about this series, but I didn’t! Truth is I was delaying my next review because I was supposed to review Kinky Kurly Knot Today, but I’m considering taking it off my Staple List. I decided to skip it for now and I will probably review it when I review Kinky Curly Curling Custard because I always use them together anyway. Instead, today I will be reviewing Donna Marie Dream Curling Creme, one of my favorite styling products. This product is a light hold creamy product that can be used for wash and goes, twist-outs, etc. I use this for almost all of my wash and goes. This styler retails for $18 for 16 ounces of product. It can be purchased in at,, and select other retailers.

Nail of the Day: Essie Cascade Cool

Who knew Pepto-Bismol pink could be so cute? Essie Cascade Cool is like the perfect blend of pink and purple. It stands out enough to get noticed, but its still office appropiate. Right now, I have this on my fingers and toes and I don’t want to take it off. The formula of this shade was nice, maybe slightly runny, but nothing too bothersome. The picture above is 2 coats and a top coat.

I love this shade! What do you think?

Most Worn Things TAG (Summer 2012 Edition)

If you frequent YouTube, I’m sure you know all about tag videos. For those of you who don’t, a tag video consists of questions and each person who is tagged (and decides to participate) answers all of those questions. I actually wasn’t tagged by anyone (I’m not popular enough 🙁 ), but I decided to do this tag anyway because I enjoyed the other videos that I had seen. If you’re interested, take a look-see below. If you open this video in YouTube, my full list of products and the questions for the tag are in the description box. Enjoy!

My First Semi-Successful Flat Twist-Out

1st Day Hair

Let me preface this post by saying, I’m not very good at actual hairstyles. In fact, I never really even washed my own hair until I was fully natural. That is actually one of the reasons that I wanted to start this blog. I want women to see that with practice and patience, anyone can manage thier natural hair.

Anyway, I decided to try another flat twist-out to see if it would look any better since my hair has grown out some. Last time I tried this, my hair was a few inches shorter and I felt that it just didn’t fall right in a twist-out. This time around, I started out on a few day old wash and go. I flat twisted my hair into 8 twists using a little water and Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie. I sealed the moisture in with Carol’s Daughter Mimosa Hair Honey. I was able to get 4 days in before I had to wash again. I maintained my hair by flat twisting in larger sections every night. Scroll down to see more pictures.
